The Short Answer
A bite pillow (also called a bite wedge or trial pillow) is the workhorse reward tool between the soft puppy tug and full sleeve training: a padded target the dog grips with a full, committed mouth while the handler controls the session through built-in handles. Choosing one comes down to three matches — bite surface (soft jute vs bite-resistant fabric vs durable cloth), handle setup (one, two or three handles), and your dog's age stage. Our range covers puppies from around 40 days through adult dogs, in jute, tear-resistant fabric and durable cloth, with models fitted with replaceable cover panels.
This guide walks through each choice, using the confirmed specifications of our bite pillow range.
Match the Pillow to Your Dog's Stage
• Puppies (from about 40 days): soft, tooth-friendly surfaces — cloth and bite-resistant fabric pillows with forgiving fill, built for early grip games and retrieve-style rewards.
• Young dogs (about 3–8 months): firmer bite-resistant fabric pillows with pronounced bite zones that help position the grip, including three-color models with pull handles and quick-release fastening.
• Adults: jute and durable-cloth pillows that take repeated full-strength bites, including trial-pillow styles used in IPO and Ring preparation.
Bite Surface: Soft, Medium or Firm
Bite pillows come in three surface families. Soft-mouth pillows (fabric with forgiving fill) reward puppies and young dogs without punishing developing teeth. Medium jute-faced pillows bridge the gap — familiar texture for the later switch to sleeves. Firm trial pillows (denser jute over stiffer cores) build grip strength for adult dogs preparing for protection work. There is no single best surface: match it to the mouth you are training.
Handles Decide How You Deliver the Reward
Handle count changes what the trainer can do. Three-pillow handle styles in our range: three-handle pillows (present from any angle, can double as fly targets), two-handle plus pull-strap models (add a long line for distance work), and single-handle compact pillows for tight spaces. Several models also feature a contoured bite recess designed for dogs that have been taught to out and re-grip on cue.
Replaceable Covers Save Money
Selected adult models use replaceable cover panels: the inner pillow keeps its shape while the worn jute or fabric cover is swapped out. For clubs and kennels running daily sessions, this cuts replacement cost significantly — check the "replaceable cover" note in the specifications when you compare models.
